FILIPINO TRAITS

Filipinos are known by their self-sacrificing hospitality. This is one of the most popular qualities of them. Like I always say, they can give up their beds and last meal to accommodate and make you feel comfortable as their guest. Respect is also very important part of the culture. You can't call someone by their names unless they're younger than you. I will be writing about this in the future so make sure you subscribe in our newsletter. Among Filipinos, family is very very important, close knit among families and relatives are very common. Everyone seems related to each other with unending responsibility. Generosity is also the whole being of Filipinos, they can give everything away without leaving anything left for themselves. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but I guess it's a beautiful quality to have. Have you noticed your filipino workmates yet, aren't they working in perfection? Generally, they have a very good work ethics, you will never hear them complaining either. When I first moved to London, I was in shocked on how people complain in almost everything including tribal matters that should't matter. In my opinion, Filipinos are generally so loving and caring, they support each other by mile. When you get to the Philippines make sure you mingle with the locals, you will have so much fun and be fed properly.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Back in the 1521 The Spanish empire colonised The Philippines, and ended with the outbreak of war in 1898 by The Americans. This fact will help you understand why there is so much diversity of Filipino culture and how we were greatly influenced by the country's conqueror. If you ever been to the Philippines, you will see footprints everywhere left by the Spaniards and Americans. Like their surnames are 70 percent Spanish descent, also foods are largely influenced by them.

LANGUAGES

Tagalog is widely spoken and is the most understood among Filipinos though there's over a hundred dialects within the country. In 1898, the Philippines became the colony of the United States. That's the reason why the majority of its population at least have some degree of fluency in the English language. At school, 40 percent of subjects are being taught in English language, while Universities promote English more than Tagalog. This is a good thing for tourism, anyone can communicate with locals easily.

WEATHER

While you can visit the Philippines all year round, it's better to avoid the rainy season which is the month of June to October. If you can avoid this season better do so, the country gets really bad typhoon during this time, you don't wanna be trap in an island while it's raining badly. December-February are my favourite months, loving the high of 28degrees just right to explore the country without getting heat stroke. While March to May is considered the summer months, it also the driest and the hottest weather, it can reach the high of 36degrees, more that you can bear. Depends with an individual I guess, some enjoy the hottest the better, while others can't cope with the heat of the scorching sun. I was on skype with my Mum the other day, on the camera I noticed right away what she's wearing, not a thick jumper but a wooly cardigan. So it really is depends on a person.

ACCOMMODATION

Hostels usually cost around $7-$10, if you want it private and more comfortable, you may have to top up to $15-$25. For a private double, prices start around $20. Free WiFi and free breakfast are quite common. Generally, the more you stay out from Manila or outside cities, prices will significantly drop. If you really want to save money, hostel and home stays are your best choice. You can actually rent a room with the cost of $70 for the whole month. Living in southeast Asia can be really cheap, do your research before you go or drop me a message I will be happy to give more advice.

FOOD

RICE- basically anything on the table is serve with rice, do not ask for cheesecake or tiramisu for dessert that does't exist, we have sticky rice coated with sugar if you like? Saying that though, Filipinos love food so much, so much that they will happily cook a lot of food to feed everybody including for all neighbourhood. Street food can be really cheap. For typical meal, you can spend a $1 for yourself, $7 at the restaurant. Markets are your best bet for finding seriously cheap food but of course be careful in eating anything especially in your first few days in the area. The most common mistakes of travellers is that they try anything when they get to places, then end up throwing up. I wouldn't advise anyone coming from the other side of the world to indulge themselves in a buffet, you can easily get food poisoning. Do it slowly, maybe in your first few days, try not to eat so much of the local food, you can do that maybe later on when your body has adjusted. My best choice is homemade food, if allowed in your lodge, cook! Make sure you try these foods filipino foods while your there;

  • PINAKBET
  • SINIGANG
  • GRILLED FISH
  • SISIG
  • LECHON
  • GINATAANG GULAY
  • KINILAW
  • PANDESAL

  • PANCIT
  • KARE KARE

Imagine being on the top of the highest peak with a panoramic view infront of you, wow, that can be a real deal! You can climb one of the 37 volcanoes around if your feeling more adventurous. You can discover caves, lakes and waterfalls while climbing the peak. Maximise your adventure, make sure you are accompanied with the professional hikers. I don't advise going on your own. For safety, be sensible. Plan.

TRANSPORT

Oh yeah!! This is one of the most exciting part. Make sure you are ready to try this adventure of your life, don't hesitate to try riding on a motorbike, tricycle and ofcourse the jeepney. I love tricycles, I think it's very cool! You can either hire them for the day or pay as you go. Depends on the distance, fare is generally cheap.

SAFETY

With all the news going around worldwide, I found myself speechless. From Drug campaign of the President Duterte to completely shutting down the most visited island Boracay, sometimes I wonder if people are still brave enough to visit Philippines. It's undeniable that this country has so much to offer in tourism, it's endowed with numerous natural wonder to pride for. Unfortunately, with all the breaking news , for some, it can be really scary. Coming from the Philippines, I can testify that there are places that you wouldn't dare visiting, nonetheless most of the area are literally safe. Filipinos are the happiest people, very welcoming and always ready to show hospitality so don't think twice in visiting this beautiful country.
